Seafarers who have completed basic training in fire prevention requirements of IMO and NIMASA approved training courses to meet with the STCW manila 2010 regulation as amended under chapter VI, section A-VI/3 and table A-VI/3.

Prerequisites

The course is open to seafarers who have completed basic training in fire prevention. All trainees must be certified by a doctor to be in good health.

Objectives

The object of the training is to deliver all required elements of STCW Advance Fire Fighting Training delivered in both theoretical and practical in accordance with section A-VI/3 of the STCW code. The emphasis of the training is in organization, tactics and command.

Target group

For seafarer that have acquired a knowledge of firefighting prevention and an ability to inspect and service fire detection and extinguishing systems and equipment. Also, can investigate and report on incidents involving fire.

Contents

Delegates will undergo practical and theoretical instruction and assessment in the following 5 modules.

  • Competence for day 1: Control fire-fighting operations aboard ship
  • Knowledge, understanding and proficiency and practical exercise
  • Introduction, safety and principles
  • Areas of fire hazards
  • Fire precautions
  • Dry distillation
  • Chemical reactions
  • Boiler uptake fires and exhaust fires in prime movers and auxiliary exhausts
  • Fires in water-tube boilers
  • Tactics and procedure of fire control while ship is at sea
  • Tactics and procedure of fire control while ship is in port
  • Tactics and procedure of fire control while ship is carrying dangerous goods
  • Tactics and procedure of fire control for oil, chemical and gas tanker
  • Use of water for fire extinguishing, the effect on stability, precautions and corrective procedures
  • Communication and co-ordination during fire-fighting operation
  • Ventilation control including smoke extractor
  • Control of fuel and electrical systems
  • Fire precaution and hazards associated with the storage and handling of materials (paints etc.)
  • Management and control of injured persons
  • Procedures for co-ordination with shore-based fire fighting
  • Competence for day 2: Organize and train fire parties
  • Knowledge, understanding and proficiency and practical exercise
  • Preparation of contingency plans
  • Composition and allocation of personnel to fire parties
  • Training of seafarers in fire-fighting
  • Fire control plans
  • Organization of fire and abandon ship drills
  • Strategies and tactics for control of fire in various parts of the ship
  • Competence for day 3: Inspect and service fire detection and extinguishing systems and equipment

  • Fire main, hydrants, hoses, nozzles and pumps
  • Portable and mobile fire extinguishing equipment including appliances
