Target group  

The target group for Stage 2 is personnel that have successfully completed OPITO Stage 1 Initial Rigger Training and wish to gain the relevant supervised workplace experience that would enable them to undertake the OPITO Rigger Stage 3 competence assessment.

Prerequisites Candidates for Stage 2 require a valid OPITO-approved Stage 1 Rigger Training Certificate
Objective The aim of this course is to deem candidates competent according to the OPITO standard and to begin the second stage of their training in the workplace under supervision, on completion of stage 1 a rigger stage 2 logbook will be issued to a successful learner, for the learner to become eligible to take the OPITO Rigger Competence Assessment, a fully completed and valid Rigger Workplace Experience Logbook must be presented to the OPITO-approved Centre that is  conducting the assessment, within two years from the completion date shown on the OPITO Rigger Initial Training Certificate, along with supporting evidence for each of the 10 tasks, such as a copy of the permit  or toolbox talks.
Contents The learner must undertake the following rigging and lifting tasks:

  • Follow an *approved lifting plan and risk assessment and obtain and rig up all lifting equipment  and lifting accessories required for the lifting operation – on five separate dates.
  • Conduct pre-use inspections on all lifting equipment and lifting accessories required to carry out  the lifting operation and report any defects found in the correct manner – on five separate dates.
  • Determine the weight of the load accurately, and plan the route, final position and orientation of  the load on five separate dates.
  • Perform cross hauling lifting operations on five separate dates
  • Lift, move, lower and land a load with an offset centre of gravity (unbalanced load) – on five  separate dates.
  • Perform a restricted access lift which can be restricted headroom, confined surrounding area,  tight (less than 200mm clear space) installation / removal route on five separate dates.
  • Contribute to the development of a lifting plan and risk assessment and have them approved – on  five separate dates.
  • Position the load in the required location and in the correct orientation – on five separate dates.
  • De-rig the lifting equipment and lifting accessories – on five separate dates.
  • Undertake post-use inspections on the lifting equipment and lifting accessories, return them to  the rigging loft and report any defects found – on five separate dates.
